The six stages of The Drayton Standard
Our Six-Stage Resin Driveway Installation Process
A premium resin driveway is not created by simply spreading resin and decorative stone over an existing surface.
Before physical work begins, we assess the condition of the existing driveway, access to the property, intended vehicle use, levels, drainage requirements and adjoining surfaces. This helps us plan an installation suited to the property rather than applying the same construction method to every project.
Our resin driveway installations across Cambridgeshire then follow six clearly defined stages. Each stage has a specific purpose, from creating stable foundations to producing the smooth, detailed finish our customers see when the work is complete. This is how we deliver The Drayton Standard.
Stage One: Excavation
Creating Stable Foundations From the Beginning
Where a full installation is required, the first physical stage is the excavation of the existing driveway or outdoor surface.
Old block paving, damaged concrete, loose gravel, soil and unsuitable foundation materials are removed to create the space needed for the new driveway system.
The excavation required will depend on the existing surface, ground conditions, proposed use and the levels around the property.
This is also the point at which we consider access, thresholds, drainage channels, adjoining pathways and how the new driveway will meet the road or pavement.
Excavation is one of the most important parts of a resin driveway installation because the finished surface can only perform as well as the ground beneath it.
Laying resin over weak, moving or badly deteriorated foundations may improve the appearance temporarily, but it does not correct the underlying problem.
The Drayton Standard begins by removing unsuitable material rather than covering it up.
Stage Two: Install the Sub-Base
Building the Structural Foundation of the Driveway
Once excavation is complete, we construct the sub-base that will support the complete resin driveway system.
Suitable aggregate is installed, levelled and thoroughly compacted to create a strong and stable foundation. Depending on the existing ground conditions, the installation may also require a capping layer, separation membrane or additional preparation before the main sub-base is installed.
The sub-base helps distribute the weight of vehicles across the driveway and supports the layers that will be installed above it.
Correct compaction is essential. A poorly compacted foundation can move or settle over time, potentially leading to low areas, uneven surfaces or cracking in the completed driveway.
Levels and falls are also carefully considered during this stage. This allows us to manage how water moves across or through the driveway and how the new surface connects with garages, pathways, drains and neighbouring areas.
Although homeowners will never see the completed sub-base, it is one of the most valuable parts of a professionally installed resin driveway.
Stage Three: Install the SRM System
A Purpose-Built Base for Resin-Bound Surfacing
Above the prepared sub-base, we install a Structural Reinforcement Mesh (SRM).
The SRM we use is the VubaMac system in accordance with the requirements of the project. VubaMac is a specialist base system developed specifically for resin-bound surfacing.
Unlike a general-purpose base that is later covered with resin, the system is designed to work together with the resin-bound surface installed above it.
The precise construction and positioning of the reinforcement will depend on the intended use and relevant installation specification.
The system creates a stable, supportive and permeable base for the finished resin surface. When installed within the appropriate application process, the VubaMac base and resin-bound top coat work together as part of the complete driveway construction.

Stage Four: Precision Edges
Clean Lines, Defined Borders and Detailed Preparation
The edges of a resin driveway do more than create an attractive border. They help define the shape of the installation, separate different areas and provide a clean transition between the resin surface and surrounding features. Depending on the property and chosen design, edging may include block paving, contrasting resin borders, existing walls, kerbs, metal edging or other suitable restraints.

Levels must be established correctly so the finished resin surface sits neatly against each edge without creating awkward lips, gaps or poorly finished transitions.

The Drayton Standard requires clean, defined edges throughout the project, not just across the most visible section of the driveway.
Stage Five: Resin Top-Coat
Accurately Mixed, Hand-Laid and Carefully Finished
The resin top-coat is the visible surface that gives the completed driveway its colour, texture and distinctive appearance.
Carefully selected natural aggregates are combined with a high-performance resin binder to create the resin-bound mixture. Unlike loose gravel, the aggregate is completely coated in resin before being applied to the prepared base.
Each batch must be measured and mixed consistently. Variations in material quantities, mixing time or installation technique can affect the colour, texture and performance of the finished surface.
The resin-bound material is then applied at the specified depth and hand-trowelled by our installation team. During this stage, we focus on:

Temperature, moisture and weather conditions must also be considered before resin is installed. We will not rush the top-coat simply to meet an unsuitable schedule. The objective is a seamless resin-bound surface that complements the property and performs as part of the complete driveway system.

Stage Six: Expertly Finished
Final Inspection, Detailing and Customer Handover
Once the resin surface has been installed, our attention moves to final detailing and inspection. We check the completed surface for consistency, clean edges, tidy transitions and an even overall appearance. Covers, drains, borders and adjoining areas are reviewed to ensure the detailing meets the expected standard.
Before the driveway is used, the resin must be allowed to cure. We provide the homeowner with clear guidance explaining when the surface can be walked on, when vehicles can return and how the driveway should be maintained.
The project is not considered complete simply because the final resin mix has been laid.
It is complete when the surface has been inspected, the detailing has been finished, the site has been cleared and the homeowner understands how to look after their new driveway.
